Drawing inspiration from a famous children's character we all know, a boy with an exceptionally long nose, the short film delves into a metaphysical exploration of existence and being. The animation exhibits impeccable skill and the manner in which it utilises different kinds of animation - from roughly drawn sketches to the use of light and colours splashed across the screen to a swift movement of images from one frame to another - ensures that it is no less than a true visual treat. This is further coupled with an equally surreal, albeit brief, usage of a background score. In case all of this was not sufficient to end the list of embellishments working most beautifully for Nosis, there is the thought behind each visual, both disconcerting and poetic at the same time. The narrative does a marvellous job of tying it all together and presenting it to the viewer as a complete product. The story in itself is of a boy who may have learnt to make peace with his unusual nose, but he is yet to find out the power it holds within. Once he unearths this truth, and the abilities he has found himself in possession of, his existence transcends all mortal realms of understanding and experience, and thus begins a long journey of acquiring knowledge. However, at the end of it all lies a dark reality, one of a being having interacted with a reservoir of knowledge that was perhaps not intended for someone in the mortal world. When all of it has unfolded, where will the protagonist find himself located in this unfathomable scheme of things?

Nosis | Short Film of the Day

A young intern has arrived at a new facility. As she is given a brief tour, being informed of her tasks, a wonderful world of all kinds of paraphernalia is invoked for both the protagonist as well as the viewer. In the process, however, she is informed to stay away from a specific object, an instruction she would of course go ahead to disobey. 

The rule gets broken, an inter-dimensional portal opens up and a realm of smooth special effects is then invoked for the viewer. Along with action and fantasy, and being a special treat for Star Wars fans, the narrative also attempts to rope in drama and humor to further share its plot. 

The final result becomes a fun and sweet story about lightsabers and stakes that remain staggeringly high throughout, all along attempting to entertain and engage the viewer. At its close, the many elements are tied together with a sense of hope and uplifting warmth that the film intends to eventually leave the audience with.

Rise of the Last Intern | Short Film Nominee

The film, marked by its vibrant visuals, takes flight into fantasy, but to talk of a concern that is very deeply rooted in our real world. A story which straddles both realms in such a manner is indeed worthy of conversation and dialogue. When it opens, the narrative draws you to a fantastical space where butterflies are dying one by one. As humans continue to expand their control over the world, the butterfly population is left to only the last few queens who have gathered to find a solution to protect themselves from extinction. It is precisely at this juncture when fantasy overlaps with reality to bring to life a very relevant issue of contemporary times, a cause of deep concern globally, and specifically in the western world — the dangerously low population of butterflies. To convey its intentions and bring to life all its underpinnings, the film also embellishes itself with skilled movement of its performers, attention to costume and makeup, and music and poetry. The climax and the eventual conclusion further highlights its core message, the eventual goal towards which the plot was moving all along, reminding you of your role amidst this narrative of magic and song.

Dreams of the Last Butterflies | Short Film Nominee

The film establishes itself in the form of perhaps a premise of a larger narrative. It employs interesting visuals, marked by their skill and thought, for the same. An anthropomorphic figure is shown as riding a fly, headed towards an unknown destination which is gradually revealed to the viewer. Once the flyer and their fly has entered a cave, the presence of more such figures, riding their own respective creature, is introduced. The animation of the film is dreamy and exhibits potential for its further development into a longer version, thereby taking the intrigued viewer deeper into the story. Additionally, along with the visuals that develop on the forefront of the narrative, there are also events unfolding in the background of this flight - figures of unknown origin, an echo of the anthropomorphic form, but massive in size as compared to the protagonist, are making their presence felt. They too have secrets and tales of their own to share with the audience. Any viewer who interacts with Chamber of the Sun would find themselves engaged, and left wanting for more.

Chamber of the Sun | Short Film Nominee

There is a calmness to the tenor of the film which works beautifully in its favour. The story is presented in the form of a fable, with an intrinsic fairytale-like quality, one that invokes four primary ideas - loyalty, fortitude, vigilance and resilience. 

The same are represented by four animals, their individual tribulations that eventually lead them to a path of companionship and finally, peace. A donkey, rooster, dog and fox are all running away from potential dangers in their path as they run into each other. Once having found one another, they follow a sunset, which serves as a lovely metaphor for the eventual sunset of their lives as well as one towards which each of us is headed. 

 The colors, animation and the seamless voiceover, a notable strength of the film, lend an unmissable charm to the overall result, while also allowing it to maintain its approach, tonality and aesthetic throughout.

A Fable for Four Voices | Short Film Nominee

The brief narrative of the film traverses a world of fantasy and magic. It takes us into a little girl's reveries as she preoccupies herself with her toys. Through the images that come to be conjured on screen before you, surreal ideas of childhood and daydream are further engaged with, ensuring that beyond a child's story of wonder, there is also a sense of dreamy nostalgia awaiting the adult viewer. As our young protagonist moves from one fantastical scene to another, progressing upon her adventure, the audience is allowed to participate in her journey. A fairy tale of a dark evening is brought to life in the process, further allowing you a moment of a fantastical escape, much like the little girl. The film eventually becomes a sincere endeavor to weave together notions of memory, images of childhood and the residue of dreams that is left behind. The animation follows a sombre palette to further drive its message home, leaving you with a simple, direct story of an evening of adventure and dreams.

Once There Was a Girl | Short Film Nominee

The film wants to tell a story of vampires and how their paths cross with a human who is determined to set right a wrong done to her. Her fiance, who was working on a mission to end the evil acts brought about by the supernatural beings, is discovered by the latter as being their nemesis. Consequently, they waste no time in putting an end to his life. The death arrives soon after he has proposed to his girlfriend. His surviving fiance then takes it upon herself to avenge her slain lover. Now that she has embarked upon this journey, will she truly succeed or be met with the same fate as him? The film wants to share a story of fantasy and murder, but could have spent more time on the edit table to be able to exercise better control on its sound.
