If the purpose of art is to disorient, this short film succeeds at it most brilliantly. With its disparate images which still somehow find a common link weaving them together, all thanks to its skilful narrative, Under Covers involves the viewer right from its very first opening visual. The film offers a heady cocktail of childish images and mature content that would leave the viewer baffled about what to make of the film, but in the most wonderful ways. From controversial to violent to simply disturbing - the images roll one after the other, invoking sexuality, religion, violence and the fear of the supernatural. On a night of a lunar eclipse, all that it simply does is delve into the lives and secrets of the inhabitants of a small town. As the surreal, dreamy transitions follow in quick successions, would you have the stomach for what it has in store for you?

The narrative of the film makes the most judicious and notable use of camerawork, coupled with sound, to conjure its story. A pre-teen girl is navigating ideas of sexuality, trying to locate her own relationship with her body and desire. Part of a household that is ravaged by divorce and parents who refuse to see each other eye-to-eye, she finds herself turning to books, peers and her own lived reality. Since the film is set in 1983, of course all this information is not simply a few web searches away on her smartphone. It's important to mention the year of the story also because it does a wonderful portrayal of a world away from the internet and technology, making the viewer forget that there might actually exist another reality. What stands out the most is the film's unique exploration of the sexual desires of an age group that rarely makes its presence felt in mainstream art and media. Add to it stellar performances by the young cast, and there is nothing in How Does it Start that will leave the viewer unimpressed after their engagement with the film.

Sexual encounters and the awkwardness of first times are no new subjects or thematic concerns for a short film, and neither are stories of queer characters, slowly making their presence felt more and more with every passing day. However combining both to talk about the newness of a sexual experience between two characters who don't conform to heteronormativity, without falling prey to the trap of glorifying it or imbuing it with a tone of tragedy, is indeed a unique approach of crafting a narrative. It is precisely in this manner that Dirty infuses a fresh breath of air in the storytelling space by exploring a mundane reality, one unfortunately not engaged with enough, and simply presenting it forth without ostentation or unnecessary emotional devices. Consequently, the film's concerns are not positioned using the self and the 'Other' binary, or juxtaposed by employing heterosexuality against homosexuality, or by pivoting the plot on any such contrast. Instead, it takes the viewer into an encounter of two young queer high-school students, one more inexperienced than the other, and the hesitation, confusion, and an unexpected situation that ensues thereafter. Additionally, it is this dedication and meticulous attention by a story to its intentions that allow it a universality and authenticity, as Dirty goes ahead to exhibit. It is also in this that lies the normalisation of a situation without ever explicitly spelling it out.

Engaging with a nuanced aspect of adoption, the short film strives for and achieves an adept exploration of sexuality. It foregrounds the supremacy of heteronormative structures of society refusing to budge from its fixed position. A young boy in a Brazilian orphanage is adopted by a family who soon sends him back to the orphanage. It continues several times until the viewer is allowed a glimpse into his life and the opportunity to find out for themselves the reason behind all the failed adoptions. The film offers the most delicate handling of a sensitive subject and portrays a boy's coming to terms with his sexuality in a skilful manner. The camerawork further enhances this as does the performance of the cast. The narrative manages to tap into the fierceness as well as the vulnerability of Jonathas with effortless ease and notable expertise. With its unique premise and honest storytelling, The Orphan becomes a poignant engagement with sexuality and a child's need to belong in the face of the hegemony of a cis-gender society that refuses to look beyond its monolithic foundations. In the process, it becomes a relevant comment on gender, the fluidity of sexuality and the pure innocence inherent to a child's approach to the world.

Trigger warning: sexual assault 

‘Trashy’ is a difficult film to engage with simply because of the deeply disturbing reality it brings to life. The film becomes even more disconcerting in the realization that the horror here is not of the actual act of grotesque violence, but of the many factors that aided the very existence of this reality. 

 The story is of one night when Naomi crosses paths with her estranged cousin Courtney, and the two girls embark on a journey of underage drinking and easy flirtation. However, despite the seeming innocence of these activities, the mundane naughtiness of all teenage life, the threat of something overpowering the narrative, and thus, the lives of the two girls before us, remains palpable throughout. 

A sinister world of shadows and seediness, too dark for the young girls to truly comprehend, is conjured for the viewer, a world from which there is no looking away, no matter how difficult the circumstance. The end result of the endeavor is a powerful story, fittingly bleak in the message it leaves you with. 

The reminder is to be free, to live your life defying the many inhibitions that may have been forced upon you, but not without caution, and definitely not at the cost of hurting those around you. Though the subject matter of the film spans repressed sexuality, and the close control of the female body, without getting preachy, it also exposes the underbelly of this well-intentioned parental and familial authority and the gross backfiring that it can potentially lead to.

Trashy | Short Film of the Day

The short film is honest and intimate enough to make the viewer feel inadequate at their unwitting peaking into the private life of its two characters. The plot is simple and is told with a deeply impressive sense of sincerity. A couple wakes up one morning in bed, and after a failed attempt at sex, a fight ensues. The performance by Jen Tullock is definitely one of the most remarkable things about the narrative, along with the judicious use of space. The entire drama of the film unfolds within a small studio apartment. The camerawork is smooth and effortless, almost making the viewer forget that they are not actually physically present with the characters. Add to it a convincing chemistry and an expertly told story by director Joey Ally, and the film becomes a well-rounded, balanced piece of cinema sure to be worth the viewer's time and attention.

Partners | Short Film of the Day

While romance per se might seem like a go-to subject when it comes to filmmaking, truly capturing its essence is not the easiest task. Weaving a narrative with nuances, subtleties and poignance requires a skilfulness which Lavender exhibits. The story of a young boy getting involved in the marriage of an older couple in itself is a premise that requires mature and intelligent handling, which this film succeeds at achieving. It opens with a tight shot of a couple sitting at a piano, the perfect picture of love and affection. However, soon the idea of the normative, monogamous couple is disrupted by a third man who joins them, yet the scene continues in the most calm and undisturbed manner. Through its delineation of the equation of the three lovers, the film attempts a moving exploration of sexuality, emotions and boundaries, allowing it to be a quiet embrace for the viewer whose warmth and scent continues to linger long after it's passed and over.

Lavender | Short Film of the Day

Eli has found himself in a difficult spot with his father and their pastor. An encounter gone wrong in a closely-knit religious community leads to the realization of the title of the film, the destructive consequences of playing too closely with fire, of flying too close to the sun, in the most heartbreaking way for our protagonist. He is located between a rock and a hard place, between desires he cannot deny, desires which take flight from the heteronormative conformity of the world he inhabits, and the oppressive traditionality that is expected of him. 

The film brings to life a heartfelt vulnerability that is both impactful in communicating its intentions, as well as lucid in the despair it portrays. 
Within the framework of its brevity, the end result manages to convey all of this and some more, supported by intelligent choices within the screenplay. The juxtaposition of a fire that empowers, the fire of desire and want for affection and touch, and the fire that consumes and burns, becomes a powerful contrast nestled within the narrative. 
The writing and performances further aid this attempt, ensuring that all of these ideas get realized with ease for the audience to engage with.

Icarus | Short Film of the Day

The growing conversation around the LGBTQIA community in contemporary society is directly proportional in its intensity to the reminder of a disturbing fact - the decades of rejection and denial of agency that the community has been subjected to. The short film is an endeavor in drawing your attention to the same fact. The method it employs to achieve its goal involves the portrayal of a true story from 1913. 

 When the film opens, it invokes for us an idyllic reality, marked by a brightness of colors and landscape, and the general cheer and intimacy that remains all pervasive as the viewer is taken deeper into it. We are further introduced to a loving couple, Jack and Anna, who is perfectly happy and content in each other's company in the little corner of their farm. However, anything that is marked by a perfection of the kind unfolding before you is bound to run into tragedy, as the narrative soon goes ahead to prove. 

 Through the delineation of all these events, the film furthers a very important conversation about the rigidity of society's monolithic structures, and the vehement opposition they put forth in the face of any flights from the normative order. It is then the story of two women, where one of them is forced to don the garb of a man simply to be able to be with the woman she loves, that the film presents an immensely relevant message to the viewer in an emphatic, resounding manner.
