It is a regular day for Rudy, an incarcerated felon in a high-security prison, who is behind bars serving a life sentence for brutal crimes against women. Without dwelling on the details, and simply working with suggestions instead, which do more than an adequate job of constructing the narrative, 'Prisoner #1616' presents itself to you. 

A researcher, Monica, has come to the prison to interact with Rudy, and confirm a theory she has been working on regarding human DNA. The dance of the power dynamics between the two characters, as they blur lines between the protagonist and the antagonist, is truly a joy to watch. 

The conversation that unfolds ensures the viewer’s attention is glued to the screen throughout, lest they miss even the slightest detail. DNA and music, a song, memories, and the past, science and reincarnation, all of them are invoked to conjure the world of the film, and what a world it is. Marked by smooth performances, neat visuals and a gripping storyline, the film refuses to let even a single moment slip, building tension and taking the viewer as well as the characters down a path of no return.

Prisoner #1616  | Short Film of the Month

‘Checkpoint’ pivots on an interesting premise that grabs the viewer’s attention right from the word go. A man wakes up in a blasted, barren heath and finds himself surrounded by the most perilous tasks. 

Abel seeks his lost love Victoria, while battling both internal and external obstacles. His greed becomes the driving force for his actions, sometimes even overcoming the love that had initially pushed him forth on the path. The video game-esque treatment of the visuals allows them a heady quality as this strange, isolating world is brought into existence. 

The fast-paced narrative packs all of this, and some more, for there indeed exists a surprising development awaiting the protagonist, as well as the viewer, at the end of it all. The story is condensed in under ten minutes, ensuring each moment is utilized to its full efficiency while, at the same time, leaving one with the prospect of a longer project that expands on the premise.

Checkpoint | Short Film of the Day

Without warning or preparation, the viewer is hurled headlong into a world marked by shadows and shivering frames. As a visual bleeds into another, a nightmarish reality of unknown terrors and fear is invoked. A deeper introduction to this disconcerting world makes one realize a sense of entrapment, claustrophobia and what seems to be an endless path of doors and windows that only serve to give rise to a transitory hope of escape, only for it to be dashed again to the ground. 

The dark reality perhaps presents a metaphor about the several complexities of the human mind that enable it to be the most powerful form of incarceration that can exist for someone, as is the case for the protagonist. As phantoms of figures move in and out of his memories, or this realm of endless corridors and doors that lead to nowhere, the metaphor attains a life of its own, allowing itself an extra layer of depth and texture in a world that has battled the many emotional and mental demons that followed in the wake of the pandemic. 

The final result, made possible by the dedication of a lean cast and crew, invokes all of these possibilities and more. This, in turn, leaves one with the suggestion that the short film could simply be a premise for a longer, more detailed project that could build on it with the inherent potential of being much, much bigger than what it already is.

The Corridor | Short Film Nominee

The documentary engages with a crucial, and difficult subject matter. It introduces the viewer to primarily four men who had all been given varying sentences of incarceration between 1994 and 2003. Alongside the story of their incarceration, however, is another story, one of hope and upliftment. The film deep dives into a bachelor’s degree program in California that began with the intention of not only giving degrees to inmates but also allow them a second chance at life. 
As the documentary's subjects take us into their journey of reform and eventual rehabilitation within society, they use words like “reenergized”. They speak of a life they never thought was possible for them, and lastly, and more significantly, they speak of breaking the cycle of injustice, violence, and crime that had previously seemed unshakable. 
Through the scenes of prison life and the world beyond as well, the film presents how dehumanizing the experience of incarceration can be, often depriving inmates any and all chance of reclaiming their humanity in society. It engages with ideas of redemption and hope, alongside internal prison politics, the subsequent networks, and a sense of brotherhood that it can conjure. 
The overarching message of the film remains one of the freeing power of education, and the influence it exerts on not just one aspect of existence, but in the formation of culture altogether, alongside the significance of community effort in uplifting human society as a whole.
