Without warning or preparation, the short film throws you into a world marked by its immense vastness that is stunning in its beauty and glory, but overwhelming in its scale. This serves a two-pronged purpose of not only catching your attention and ensuring it remains tightly within its grasp throughout, but also establishing a premise that has already begun to invoke unsettling emotions within the viewer. A solitary figure of a woman, her face protected by a gas mask, further underlines the loneliness of this seemingly post-apocalyptic reality where only the wind and the sea break the oppressive silence. 

<br><br> Equipped with an economy of dialogue, along with a remarkable background score, the film introduces us to a setting that is defined by a deep sense of isolation. Finding herself to be the only survivor in a massive space, the woman moves from one discarded object to another - rejects and leftovers on which now her survival depends. However, it is the emotional needs of existence that dominate the physical ones in the narrative. The thought gains increasing resonance in a world which is only beginning to come out of a pandemic, after ensuring each of us has waged our own individual battle with despair and seclusion. 

<br><br> In the process, West Winds not only becomes a sophisticated example of skill and finesse, but also a much needed expression of the many challenges of mental health. The woman is unnamed and hence could be anyone of us in her quest to find comfort. Her limitless surroundings can thus be viewed as a metaphor for the endless pits of mental and emotional demons. This, in turn, allows the story to communicate not only important lessons on the aforementioned issues of mental health, but also about the significance of companionship, kindness and the warmth of friendship that is capable of enveloping you in an unbreakable armour against the many onslaughts of despondency and hopelessness.

West Winds | Short Film of the Day

The realm of ‘Vultures’ is constructed with a refreshing uniqueness of voice that remains steadfast throughout the entirety of the film. It presents a space inhabited by only three characters, each more powerful than the other in the absolutely stunning performances and bodily movements they bring to life. <br><br>
The viewer is presented with a dystopic world, at the brink of its end where two vultures fight over what is left as the last vestiges of existence.
The heavy symbolism and metaphors continue to heighten the tension within the narrative which carefully controls and maintains its energy and intensity. <br><br>
The actors, weaved into an equally complementary screenplay and visual development, ensure that the many intentions of the plot achieve a fitting portrayal on camera. Though not all metaphors would be grasped at first glance, demanding a deeper engagement on behalf of the viewer, the film conveys each emotion and sentiment that it means to with ease and success. 



Vultures | Short Film Nominee

Right at its opening, the film declares it is based on true events, immediately capturing the audience’s attention. However, the revelation of this truth completely subverts any expectations that might have been built so far. <br><br>A couple, marked by their love and affection, lives a life of penury, starvation, and loss. 
The woman, Bonnie, has not recovered from their most recent tragedy, but the love between the two still allows them a moment of peace and joy. This brief instance, however, is soon struck by another tragic development, shattering any semblance of normalcy and familial affection the two might have desperately clung to so far. <br><br>

The film presents a reversal of fate to draw attention to the cruelty implicit in the act of killing a living being for consumption. It presents a comment on human apathy, and in a way, humankind's own bestial nature that allows it to celebrate, or carry on mundane everyday affairs around a meal table that is built on a carcass. The performances, storytelling, and narratorial construction remain impactful in all that they wish to convey. The visual representation of these ideas too exhibits investment of thought and skill as it shares this reality with the viewer. 


Bonnie and Orville  | Short Film of the Month

Set in a world that is dominated more by shadows than light, by an all-pervasive sense of despair than prosperity, and by a potential crumbling of a familial structure as opposed to the intimacy one might associate with the space, 'Cera' takes you headlong into its world right from the word go. When the film opens, a violent event has already occurred. <br><br> Our protagonist, John (Jason Isaacs) is in a desperate frenzy to get urgent medical aid for his wife who lies on the floor, bleeding profusely. Amidst it all, the overpowering presence of Cera never truly leaves the viewer even though she is absent from the visuals unfolding before you so far. The story develops gradually to reveal its dystopic world of artificial intelligence gone terribly wrong. <h2>Of the film's setting and casting, director John Robinson Irwin says, "We shot outside of a small town, a couple hours north of Los Angeles. The logistics around getting a cast and crew of 20 people up there, finding a place for them to stay and keeping the budget around a level that wouldn’t break me, was quite a challenge. 

The fact that Jason Isaacs was delighted to be in the short was truly unbelievable. He was so humble and incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. It was marvelous to work with a true professional like him, someone with such an absolute love of the craft and a clear understanding of what makes a compelling story."</h2>

It is also worthy of note that though similar themes have been a subject of exploration previously in film and media, Irwin brings his own unique voice to the subject. 

<h2>When asked what are the motivations behind exploring its darker aspects, he replies,
"I have two kids and as I’ve watched them grow up, I’ve noticed how many apps, technology and devices we have to help our life feel a little more organized. There are all these new services and technology, but there’s also plenty of distraction keeping us from actually connecting with people. I realized I wanted to tell a high-stakes story of a family putting trust in the wrong places and only realizing the connection they’ve lost with those they care for the most."</h2>

It is indeed this dependency on technology that gets amplified and portrayed in John's young daughter Hailey's relationship with Cera, the AI caregiver of the child. As truly disturbing events come to be, perhaps orchestrated by Cera herself, the plot plants its feet firmly into the ground, ensuring the viewer has now reached a point of no return. 

<br><br>Interestingly, the film is intended to be a proof of concept for a longer project titled North End. 

<h2> Irwin describes the latter as being "more focused on this family who has built a life around avoiding relationships, but is then forced to connect with each other after being flung in such a traumatic situation. John and Hailey’s best hope for survival is to stay on the water and get as far from civilization as possible until they know the extent of what’s happening... He’s just gone through hell to get himself and Hailey to safety and the hardest thing he has to do now is forge a relationship with his own daughter. As the two head further and further up river, they start to piece together what’s happening, and what they inevitably have to do to stay together." </h2>

At its close, the film presents to you the visuals of a despondent rural space as the father-daughter duo make their escape against a horizon dotted with aircrafts, ensuring that the question about their fate never truly leaves you, even long after you are done watching the short film.

Cera | Short Film of the Day

‘The Factory’ conjures a world that is deliberately sterile, marked by the absolute control of its beings, and their thoughts and existence. An ‘Overseer’ watches upon newborns, ensuring that they are aptly educated in this world’s way of life which leaves no room for deviation from the fixed order of things. <br><br>

As they move from one stage of development to another, still barely coming to terms with this newly formed life of theirs, tools of indoctrination are ready to snuff out any and all illusions of free will, and instead feed them ready-made ideas that are most beneficial to the functioning of the said society. <br><br>

The film invokes a dystopian world of strange beings, and yet, the ideas that mold this world are no different from those that shape our very own lived reality. The animation and its coupling with storytelling, though borrowing from past iconic pieces of art, is unique and individual in expression, and therefore manages to tie all the various components together smoothly.


The Factory | Short Film of the Day

Teddy has found herself at the gates of afterlife, but it is nothing the viewer might expect. The realm is marked by a complete ban on any kind of communication, as the mute members of the community work on the approvals and rejections of those passing through this purgatory. <br><br>

Though the premise might have asserted fantasy, a sense of dystopia also enters this space of absolute control with no room for any individual voices. Amidst it all lie brief moments of intimacy, the promise of companionship, and the dashed hopes of what a peaceful existence might have looked like. <br><br>

The project is not devoid of its rough edges, especially in the communication of its intentions and ideas. However, it exhibits deep potential, definitely paving the path for more such storytelling and narrative-building by the young team.



The After | Short Film Nominee

Located within the dystopic reality of Monochrome, a world where colors have ceased to exist, the short narrative attempts an engagement with the ideas of censorship. The theme has specific relevance in a world where autocratic forces are on the rise all over the world. The story borrows from contemporary reality, but also from the past and its ideas of totalitarianism with Fahrenhein 451 by Ray Bradbury as one of the inspirations behind it. <br><br>

The protagonist, Mauve, a painter, inhabits a society where the goverment has released graysenthol in the air, a chemical which robs the world of all its colors, quite literally, leaving him with only memories of what once was. With a near-complete absence of dialogue, the narrative still makes its core idea clear in the first few minutes itself when a radio broadcast extols the many benefits of uniformity for it inadvertently implies zero conflict as well.

<br><br> As artists are silenced within the realm of Freedom of Expression, a comment is further made about the strength and revolutionary nature of art in holding a mirror to an extremely problematic society. The short narrative shows a sincere desire to share its story, even if losing points in the manner of execution. The thought, and the heart, of the final result is on point and in place, it would be interesting to see more deviations from the manner in which they are portrayed by the team in future endeavors.
