Unannounced

By Eliyas Qureshi with 6.3

The title of the film sets in motion several possibilities that will come to determine the narrative - will it be an unannounced pregnancy, a guest, a family member, all of it, or something completely different? Once the questions have been raised in the viewer's mind, the narrative takes its time to develop organically and answer them all. While a man eats breakfast with his wife, unaware of a piece of information she is engaging with in her own mind, his mother arrives at the door, quite unexpectedly.

If so far the plot had seemed like it was deliberately convincing you of an imminent pregnancy, then the appearance of the mother at the doorstep subverts this expectation. The remaining developments endeavour to offer a comment on familial bonds and their location in the domestic space. The film also provides insight on the forever forward moving passage of life, where a loss is often followed by a new beginning and vice versa.
