Science fiction, as a genre, is often wrongly assumed to be more of a storytelling device that deals with the external plot and events around a character, rather than their internal motivations, emotions and sentiment. Subverting this misconception is Can't Go Home Again which takes us into the experiences of a woman who uses her time traveling abilities to fight and prevent the trauma caused to her past-self.

The film locates itself in 2022 London where a woman, Elliott Young, has traveled back in time to save her mother and the younger-Elliott from an abusive husband and father. By positioning its protagonist who risks everything, including her life, to come to this unauthorized time period to fix a wrong, the narrative inadvertently offers its own views about protecting those who need to be protected from forces stronger and bigger than them.

It further goes ahead to assert the same point when Elliott expresses the satisfaction of seeing the mother-daughter revel in a moment of happiness, an experience that was denied to her as a child. While playing with the fabric of time might leave her own existence in jeopardy, it is enough to know that she did everything in her might to save them from a far worse fate. It is indeed in this message of hope and love that perhaps the portrayal of the true intentions of the film are achieved, reminding the viewer that science fiction is more than time travel and futuristic societies. Like any other story, sometimes it is simply a narrative about looking out for each other.
